coffee by the beans @ Lockleys.

Posted by luvmylatte on September 7, 2011 in Reviews |

Located in a place one would least expect to find an espresso bar coffee by the beans can be found just off Henley Beach Road, facing Rowells Road so if you are coming down Henley Beach Road from the city, you can’t actually see it.  It is most definitely worth the search to discover.

The decor is modern but classy yet comfortable.  The atmosphere is relaxing and welcoming with some funky world music playing in the background adding a special touch to the ambience.   There is no food menu as such, other than a few HUGE muffins and cookies in jars on the counter.   During my conversation with Daniel and Richard they explained that their focus is on the coffee and not on food.  They really went out of their way to get to know me and are very friendly and passionate about coffee.

The hand painted words on the wall “we love beans”, “we love the taste” and another “we love chit chat” sum the espresso bar up perfectly.

coffee by the beans source their coffee from around the world, including Colombia, Brazil, and Papua New Guinea.

Vincent Leonardis, who is the owner, philosophy is “to embrace the romance between people and coffee. We believe we can achieve this, through our commitment to provide a medium for people to become intimate with coffee from the first moment it is picked, to the very cup we drink.”

I ordered a latte which was made with single origin Costa Rican – their own beans (sourced and roasted) and was unique and fantastic in flavour.  The taste was very smooth, strong, full-bodied coffee which was well roasted and not bitter nor acerbic.  The flavour was nice and long lasting, leaving no bitter aftertaste.

Cost – $3.50 for a regular drink in and $4.00 for a take away latte.

You can also purchase their beans for your own home usage.

coffee by the beans also service Saeco and Delonghi coffee machines as well as carry a selection of cleaning and descaling products, stainless milk jugs, thermometers, shakers, shot glasses and much more.

coffee by the beans is a business focused on coffee and beans, nice and simple.

So, drop in and say hello

Dôme @ Geraldton

Posted by luvmylatte on September 4, 2011 in Reviews |

Recently I had the opportunity to travel to Geraldton with a group of good friends to support the DeadRed WineGroup’s expansion interstate.  Of course this meant an opportunity for me to explore and discover new coffee shops.

Located on the foreshore of Geraldton with views of the ocean I discovered Dôme.

Dôme is recognised for their signature domed ceilings, wood panelling and deep leather armchairs.  The environment is warm and inviting.  Outside one finds a wrap around patio that looks out on the ocean creating a tranquil and relaxed setting.

The menu is large and full of variety, offering breakfasts, lunches as well as cakes and pastries.

I ordered my latte, a large one of course, and when it arrived almost fell off of my chair.  I have never seen such a huge glass.  I was a little concerned that my latte would be weak and too milky but I was certainly surprised.

My latte had a nice mircrofoam and had simple latte art.   The coffee was smooth, full-bodied but not overpowering, the aroma enticing and on tasting was not bitter at all.  I was left with an aftertaste of nuts and hint of chocolate

Dôme have their own blend of handpicked international coffee which is available to purchase from their stores.

“Dôme, the pick of the red cherries.  Since the 10th Century, the cultivation, blending and roasting of the fine red cherries of the Coffee tree has been an art form.  Bach’s Coffee Cantata was inspired by it; Beethoven meticulously counting out sixty beans for every cup and the French Novelist Zola wrote to it.  Since 1983 Dôme has been selling the world’s finest coffee, roasted daily for optimum flavour.  Dôme’s master roaster searches for the best beans available from the world’s finest coffee growing regions.   We then roast the beans to our exacting specifications to produce the finest blends and flavours.  All Dôme coffees are 100% Arabica beans, universally acclaimed as the finest aromatic coffee.  Dôme, continuing the art of coffee.”

I also had the opportunity of meeting the owner of the store, a charming gentleman called Graham.

I look forward to visiting Dôme again, but perhaps next time I will order just a regular size ;-)

Thought of The Day

Over second and third cups flow matters of high finance, high state, common gossip and low comedy.  [Coffee] is a social binder, a warmer of tongues, a soberer of minds, a stimulant of wit, a foiler of sleep if you want it so.  From roadside mugs to the classic demi-tasse, it is the perfect democrat.

Nosh @ Tanunda, Barossa Valley

Posted by luvmylatte on July 21, 2011 in Reviews |

I set out for a Sunday drive to visit Chateau Tanunda for the Small Winemakers Annual tasting and after sampling some glorious Grenache and Grenache blends from some awesome wine makers it was time to find somewhere for lunch.

After heading into Tanunda I discovered Nosh, an eclectic, quaint cafe that serves delicious locally sourced food.  The menu also has gluten-free options.

The cafe itself is small and has 5 or 6 tables inside and

room for 2 outside on a nice day.  The decor is well suited to a country town and has a warm relaxed atmosphere.

I ordered a salmon bagel and a latte.   The bagel was freshly made and extremely tasty.  The smoked salmon was rich and almost buttery in texture.  This combined beautifully with some nice creamed cheese, avocado, capers and a crisp toasted bagel, and some fresh snipped chives provided a perfect balance in flavours

The latte had nice microfoam with lovely latte art.  The aroma was enticing and on tasting was not bitter at all.  The taste was full bodied but not over powering.  I was left with an aftertaste of nuts and hint of chocolate.  Overall it was a great latte and left me considering ordering a second.

Nosh uses Sacred Grounds Organic Coffee and supports fair trade.

At Nosh its ok to be fussy. Nosh believes that our lives are richer for being discerning about our food source, the quality of the produce we consumer, that farmers and Artisan producers are cared for, that our footprint is light and that every morsel we consumer is delicious.” Nosh Barossa’s philosophy

What a lovely discovery and a great way to round off an outing to the awesome Barossa Valley.

T Bar @ Central Markets Adelaide

Posted by luvmylatte on July 10, 2011 in Reviews |

Being the coffee lover I am I recently found myself in unfamiliar territory in a tea bar in the Adelaide Central Markets.

T Bar tea salon first opened in the Adelaide Central Markets back in 1999.  The decor is funky and the colours bold.  The walls are coloured red and black and there is a wall with shelves filled with a variety of over 100 teas to choose from as well as quirky accessories.

Music filters through the shop providing a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

T Bar provides both on-street seating for those wanting to enjoy an alfresco experience and even seating within the Market itself.

I ordered my latte with scepticism and prepared myself for what may have been an awful coffee experience for me.   I was more than pleasantly surprised.

My latte was full bodied and from the first sip had the “wow” factor.  The coffee was smooth and nutty with a distinctive aroma reminiscent of roasted nuts and no bitter aftertaste.

For those lovers of both tea and coffee, I definitely recommend paying a visit to T Bar tea salon for the unique and satisfying experience.

Tre Pani @ Dover Heights, Sydney

Posted by luvmylatte on June 25, 2011 in Reviews |

Tre Pani is located in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs. The atmosphere is fun, friendly and homely.  There are both indoor and outdoor seating areas and one is spoilt with glorious harbour views if sitting outside.

Tre Pani is an organic cafe that bakes pastries and breads fresh daily and come in different varieties, shapes and sizes.  There is a wide selection of croissants and pastries on display for your drooling pleasure as well as a menu for meals.  They use organic flour and free range eggs.

Tre Pani source their beans from Numero Uno and have their own special blend.  The beans are fair-trade, organic and rainforest alliance certified.

My espresso had a wonderful crema, bold in flavour with a hint of nut and chocolate but not overpowering or bitter.

My latte was full flavoured with a good microfoam and latte art.  The flavour of the coffee lingered on my taste buds long after I had finished my coffees … yummo!

To accompany my coffee I indulged and had a chocolate and pistachio scroll.

Wow!  The pastry was crisp, flaky and not over buttery which simply melted in the mouth.

I will most definitely be going back the next time I am in Sydney ;-)

Bar 9 – Specialist Coffee Boutique

Posted by luvmylatte on June 12, 2011 in Reviews |

Bar 9 is located on the fringe of the city in Parkside.  The cafe’s decor is rustic and the atmosphere warm and welcoming.  Although the location is small, the quality that is provided is great.

Bar 9 source their milk from a local boutique farm Tweedvale Dairy in Lobethal situated in the Adelaide Hills.

Interaction with the barista’s is encouraged as the story behind the bean is just as important as the way in which it’s brewed.  Their passion for coffee is evident.  They take their coffee seriously at Bar 9.  There is also a good breakfast menu and nice sandwiches and cakes.

Today I ordered both an espresso and a latte.  The espresso was the Baristas blend which is a constantly changing blend which represents the style of espresso that the baristas are enjoying at the time.  I found the espresso to have no specific flavour and a little too much on the acidic side for my palate.  It was rather different and unique in flavour.

The latte was made with their Black Label blend which essentially is the house blend.  Having heard so much about Bar 9 I was really looking forward to experiencing the full bodied, nuttiness and subtle spice flavour but I was let down.  I am not sure if perhaps my latte was just a bad pour with little flavour but I am hoping that it was a once off as I would like to go back another time and try again.  The micro foam however was velvety smooth and the latte art was awesome.

A unique and quirky touch is the little note that is placed on each saucer ;-)
